Key Stage 3 Physical Education at St Wilfrid’s Academy
Curriculum intent
Students follow content according to the National Curriculum for Physical Education with one timetabled lesson per week. Students have the opportunity to experience and develop in a variety of sports including team games, individual, racket, athletics and gym sessions on a state of the art new gym facility.
During various sporting activities, students can experience a sense of enjoyment and competitiveness whilst having the freedom to create their own style of play. Emphasis is also focused on team building in relation to key personal attributes such as motivation, determination, respect and character building.
Students are encouraged to work both individually and in teams to allow their social skills to develop in a safe, suitable learning environment. Within theory lessons, Informed choices surrounding health, wellbeing and diet are delivered and encouraged to provide the students with a positive physical and mental platform.
All KS3 students have the opportunity to attend weekly swimming lessons, and have the option to attend mountain biking , gym, yogaand football as part of the schools enrichment programme.
KS4 : OCR Sports Studies
Students follow content according to the assigned modules set by OCR with three hours of assigned lessons per week. Students will have the opportunity to create independent pieces of coursework, internal assessments in two sports of their choice (Individual and team) and attempt an end of year exam relating to contemporary issues in sport.
Students will work towards the completion of four modules, in order to achieve a full GCSE in Sport. These will consist of the following:
-R051 Contemporary Issues in sport.
-R052 Developing sports skills.
-R053 Sports leadership.
-R054 Working in the sports industry.

Students will choose two favoured sports to be assessed in and create a development plan in order to achieve progression.
Within theory lessons, students will explore contemporary issues in sport and the link with the media. Students will also have the opportunity to create coaching plans and self-assessments in order to develop in specific skills, gaining valuable experience that could be utilised in a work or sports setting.
Students will receive a qualification in Sport Studies upon the completion of the course. Students will demonstrate a range of skills by completing coursework modules, practical assessments in coaching, performing, and officiating with a final written exam at the end of the course.
In practical lessons, students will:
A understand the rules, regulations and scoring systems for selected sports.
B practically demonstrate skills, techniques, and tactics in selected sports.
C be able to review sports performance and highlight strengths and areas for improvement.
D Develop leadership, confidence, team working and communication skills.
In theory lessons, students will:
A Develop ICT skills in order to complete assigned coursework tasks.
B Work independently and cohesively with peers.
C Strengthen the understanding and knowledge of the four compulsory modules.
D Create a sports specific CV, research, plan and apply into desired sports roles.
The intent of our curriculum is implemented through:
- studying a variety of sports and activities – experiencing tactics and strategies through a series of condition and competitive games.
- having the opportunity to attend extra-curricular activities and represent the school. Celebrating successes and manage the challenges of defeat.
- Performance – being able to develop skill in different scenarios, individually, as pairs and in groups or teams. Exploring tactics, strategies and implementing skills learnt to a broad range of sporting situations.
- Health, fitness and physical preparation – Students will understand and build on knowledge to answer the questions – how do I improve fitness? How to prepare and recover from physical activity safely? How do I test fitness? Understanding that will allow students to lead a healthy active lifestyle both now and in the future.
- Leadership & Character – participate in lesson with correct equipment, work together in pairs, groups and teams. Lead peers and through sport develop self-esteem, confidence and resilience.
- Knowledge/Theory – Develop an understanding of ‘anatomy and physiology’, ‘fitness and training’, ‘Nutrition’ and ‘sport injury’. Students will develop vocabulary and support knowledge through practical experiences.
