At St Wilfrid’s we understand that English is a vital life skill and our aim is to develop students who are not only proficient with their use of the spoken and written forms of English Language but to also develop their love of the subject and develop their appreciation of literature by promoting reading for enjoyment. The English department aims to ensure that all pupils:

  • read easily, fluently and with good understanding
  • are able to select information from a text to support their ideas or justify an argument
  • develop the habit of reading widely and often, for both pleasure and information
  • acquire a wide vocabulary, an understanding of grammar and knowledge of linguistic conventions for reading, writing and spoken language
  • appreciate our rich and varied literary heritage
  • write clearly, accurately and coherently, adapting their language and style in and for a range of contexts, purposes and audiences
  • use discussion in order to learn; they should be able to elaborate and explain clearly their understanding and ideas
  • are competent in the arts of speaking and listening, making formal presentations, demonstrating to others and participating in debate. 

KS4

GCSE English Language: Eduqas

This course is split into three sections, two written examinations where students ability to read and understand a text as well as being able to right clearly and accurately is assessed. Students also have to prepare a two minute presentation which demonstrates their ability to present their ideas and communicate with an audience. The examinations are structured as follows:

Component 1

Written Examination 1 hour 45 minutes on 20th Century Literature Reading and Creative Prose Writing.

Section A (20%) – Reading

One extract approximately 60 – 100 lines of literature from the 20th century.

Total marks available = 40

Section B (20%) – Prose Writing

One creative writing task drawn from a selection of four titles

Total marks available = 40

Component 2:

Written Examination 2 hours on 19th and 21st Century Non-Fiction Reading and Transactional/Persuasive Writing

60% of the total marks

Section A (30%)Reading

Two extracts approximately 900 – 1200 words in total of high quality non-fiction writing from the nineteenth and twenty-first centuries.

Total marks available = 40

Section B (30%)Writing

Two compulsory transactional/persuasive writing tasks.

Total marks available = 40

Component 3: Spoken Language Non-exam assessment

Unweighted

One formal presentation or speech, including responses to questions and feedback.

It is 100% Exam. This means that a student’s grade relies on their performance on the day.

GCSE English Literature: Eduqas

This course has written examinations which requires the study of whole texts where 5% of the marks are allocated to accurate spelling, punctuation and grammar and 20 – 25% of the total marks are for tasks where learners are re4quired to perform comparisons across those texts. Learners will be required to study a Shakespeare play (this year it will be Romeo and Juliet), a 19th century novel, A Christmas Carol, a selection of poetry including romantic poetry and conflict poetry provided through the Eduqas anthology, a fiction or drama from 1914 onward, Blood Brothers and unseen texts which will be examined through unseen poetry   The exam is graded 9 – 1 (9 being the highest).

Component 1

Section A (20%) – Shakespeare: Romeo and Juliet

One extract question and one essay question base on the reading of the text.

Section B (20%) – Poetry from 1789 to the present day

Two questions based on poems from the Eduqas Poetry Anthology, one of which involves comparison. These will be taught to the students prior to the exam.

Section A (20%) Post 1914 Prose/Drama Blood Brothers

One source based question on the text.

Section B (20%) 19th Century Prose – A Christmas Carol

One source based question on the text.

Section C (20%) Unseen Poetry

Two questions on unseen poems, one of which involves comparison.

English is invaluable for your future no matter what you are aiming for. A good command of the spoken and written word will help you every day – and benefit all your other GCSEs too. Whatever you end up doing, English is a must have subject for college, university, work and life!
